Zoom Webinar: Christina Shand - 'I Give You the end of a Golden String'
Christina Shand’s garden, Dyffryn Fernant, is a personal statement, her response to the landscape in which it sits, under the Preseli Hills, one mile from the sea in Pembrokeshire, Wales. In this richly illustrated talk, ‘I Give you the end of a Golden String’, Christina leads us on a journey through her garden, using new breath-taking photographs by Claire Takacs, as well as old photos that help illustrate the garden's history.
The title of this talk is taken from William Blake's poem:
I Give You the end of a Golden String
Only roll it into a ball
It will lead you in at Heaven's Gate
There in Jerusalem's wall
According to Christina, "A very dear friend lettered this onto a large piece of elm wood and I displayed it in the garden for many years. He did indeed give me the end of a golden string. It will lead us into a journey through the garden."
The conditions in Christina Shand's Welch garden are similar to those in the Puget Sound. Be prepared to be inspired by Christina’s journey as she moved into a semi-derelict stone farmhouse on a Welsh hillside with thin, rocky acid soil and a mild, wet climate - with no thought of making a garden. Yet bit by bit, she created a garden that is described as having a ‘spiritual and poetic quality’.
